Our CityTrees have a new home: B-Part Am Gleisdreieck!   As part of Horizon 2020, an EU funding program for research and innovation, three CityTrees are on a roadshow through Berlin. After their grand premiere at the Ku'damm, they have now arrived at their second stop, the B-Part. Since its opening at the beginning of 2019, B-Part has stood for innovation, sustainability and creativity! Thus, it’s the perfect location for our CityTrees!   The diverse city quarter is much more than a modern co-working space! Here, an innovative and inter-cultural meeting place has been successfully created, uniting all aspects of future life and work: art and cultural projects, cross-generational social facilities, sustainable urban development as well as offerings for ‘new mobility’ and ‘future work’.    Uniquely combining moss’ natural abilities with innovative IoT technologies, the CityTrees provide clean air for the creative minds of the B-Parts and encourage people to take a break in the sun. Especially here, the CityTrees can demonstrate that it is possible to breathe clean, fresh air at an urban hotspot between railway tracks and the pulsating city life.    We are excited to be part of this special place!  ...

Green City Solutions turns six today, so: Happy Birthday! Since their incorporation and invention in 2014, Green City Solutions and the CityTree are continuously being further developed. Both of them are just like our children, so we provided them with everything they need. As we watched them grow up, they brought us a lot of happiness. We caught them if they stumbled. But they learned to stand and walk on their own. They grow up so fast! Six years of Green City Solutions also mean six years of fresher air in cities, six years of unlocking the powers of our superhero moss and six years closer to an integrated IoT solution to the world’s air pollution problems. On behalf of the entire Green City Solutions team we would like to thank you all for the support! Much has already been achieved - and many more projects will follow. Stay tuned!“Has it really been six years already? I´ve been there from the very first moment and watched our idea grow, learn, adapt and inspire many people including myself. There were sleepless nights and tears but also moments of pure happiness and pride and I think only parenthood comes close to what we have experienced. Words can never express my gratitude to all the people who have been part of Green City Solutions over all the years, who carried the spirit and burden on their shoulders to make this more than just an idea. A big thank you to all our supporters, followers and believers who share our vision and have spread it all over the world. I believe that with your help in these extraordinary times we can continue to grow, grow our team, grow our vision and grow fresh air.” – Liang Wu, founder and CIO...

Covid-19 has a firm grip on the world. Public life in Germany has all but come to a halt. Cities are on lockdown. The DAX fell 40% off its high in just four weeks. It is a new world and society faces new challenges. We as a young biotech company, with an ecological mindset, are feeling the full blow of this catastrophe. But: the mosses grow regardless and we are building eight more CityTrees for upcoming projects. Just as firms are affected, we as individuals are as well. At Green City Solutions, we are rising to the challenge by working from home, self-quarantining, and socially distancing. We are learning to cope with not sitting next to our co-workers, leaving our homes only once a day, or keeping distance to our loved ones. In times like these it is important to return to essentials. Each one of us has more time to reflect and to remind ourselves ever more of our core values: optimism and sustainability. And one truth binds us all: we are in this together and we will make the best of it. Covid-19 is only the first challenge barreling our way at breakneck speed. Climate change, with its heat waves, air pollution and other negative effects, can bolster the spread and magnitude of further pandemics. Even if we use most of our energy to fight the virus and manage our new personal challenges, we have to realize more than ever: we can and must take sustainable action now to make the future better and safer from crises like the current one. The essence of our work at Green City Solutions is to improve air quality and we have now become even more aware of how important our mission is! Research teams' initial studies indicate a clear connection between fine dust pollution and higher mortality rates due to Covid-19. A Harvard study discovered that an increase of only 1 μg/m³ in PM2.5 is associated with an 8 % increase in the COVID-19 death rate. Low air quality thus causes not only cardiac arrhythmia and dementia, but especially lung and respiratory diseases. In other words, these are the very conditions that now make our families, friends and neighbours to risk groups. Let us work together to counteract these effects. We stand for providing sustainably clean and healthy air and work towards achieving that goal with all our energy. We bring nature back to the city – now more than ever.  This means for us: we are now even more motivated to make our contribution. Our natural superhero moss has powers unknown to many. Mosses metabolize particulate matter, some are antiseptic, antiviral and a fungicide; allrounders when it comes to air filtration and health. Utilizing IoT technology, in our case the symbiosis of sensors, intelligent ventilation, irrigation and software, we can activate these natural purification capabilities. This is our contribution to a sustainably healthy society, our contribution to a long-term change towards fresh air for all. Companies all over the world struggle with the consequences of the coronavirus. Naturally, we too are affected by this crisis. Being a young, technology-driven company, we are digitized regardless of the present crises. Our roughly 30 co-workers are used to working remotely. We need to learn to adapt nonetheless. And - it can work. Furthermore, we are convinced that specially startups can help in this crisis because startups are outliers in solving difficult problems, fast! That is why we joint the Startups Against Corona initiative! With www.startupsagainstcorona.com it’s our aim to move fast and connect with other companies and startups to help each other FAST. Our business is up and running, our team is as motivated as ever, and we are looking forward with confidence. We are making the best of it. It is easy to get stressed over the news and the situation. We are in a lucky position: anytime we feel stressed, we can reach over, grab some moss and inhale its tantalizing smell. If you also need a few minutes to take a breath and do not have moss near you, click here for a breathing exercise for you to relax. Stay safe and look ahead. We will do so as well and continue to work on our technology and to adhere to our motto: We grow fresh air....

Thursday, March 12th, 10:13am: the last drops of rain fall as founders Peter Saenger and Liang Wu present the new generation of CityTrees before the eyes of 120 guests and many passers-by on the forecourt of BIKINI Berlin. “In essence: perfect weather for moss”, says Antje Leinemann, CEO BIKINI Berlin, in her opening speech. The crowd laughs. Following her, Nora Hesse lays out the goals of the European Commission for the promotion of the ‘technological elite of Europe’ as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. Just then, the sun breaks through the clouds. It’s the perfect moment for Peter Saenger and Liang Wu to unveil the three CityTrees. “Ladies and Gentlemen, when we founded Green City Solutions six years ago, we would never have imagined standing here one day. After more than 50 projects in Europe, many patents filed and 60,000 hours of work only in 2019 we are proud to present to you today: the CityTree 2020."  The crowd cheers. The rbb documents the show. While Peter and Liang get interviewed by a queue of journalists, the CityTrees are inspected by the visitors more closely. The Bauhaus-inspired design fits perfectly into the urban scenery featuring the Upper West Tower and the Waldorf Astoria.  The wooden parts of the construction are dominant and many a nose finds their way to the moss. It is possible to smell fresh air after all. We bring nature back to the city – with the CityTree. After the unveiling on Forecourt West the event continues in the Spreegold restaurant at Bikini Berlin with invited guests. Press, investors and customers listen closely as CEO Peter Saenger presents the detailed development history of the CityTree. It features exclusive behind the scenes regarding the moss farm, the scientific processes documenting performance and team motivation. One of the core issues: How is state-of-the-art IoT-technology utilised to activate the natural filtering capabilities of mosses? After the presentation, the team answers every question from the guests during the get together, supported by exhibits like a small CityTree model and different moss species. An impression by CCO Max Gimpel-Henning: “We all noticed how much we were able to excite people. We were blown away by the interest, the many kind words and smiles.” This is just the beginning: a total of nine CityTrees will go on a road show through Berlin, featuring prominent locations like Ku’Damm, Messe Berlin and Alexanderplatz. There they will spread awareness for the importance of air quality this summer and fall. Now more than ever we are aware that clean air has to be one of the cornerstones of public health. Stay tuned for updates – we grow fresh air....
