A new series of tests with external measuring institutes shows the enormous filter effect of young mosses
The CityTree has a significant effect on air quality. It removes more than half of the fine dust pollution from the air at a distance of one meter. There are still around a third of the less harmful (ultra-fine) air particles bound by the mosses in the CityTree and converted into natural biomass at a distance of three meters. The sustainable bio-air filter also cools the air down by around four degrees Celsius at a distance of one meter and noticeably increases the humidity (by up to 20%). For us, the useful data of the CityTree are both an expression of our research and development performance and an incentive for further milestones in filter and cooling performance. But how do we know which values are achieved by the filter performance of our mosses?
Close cooperation with the Tropos Institute Leipzig and the ILK Dresden
The evaluation of the CityTree has been closely monitored for years by our scientific partners, the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (Tropos) Leipzig, and the Institute for Air and Cooling Technology (ILK) Dresden. The two renowned independent institutes adhere to the highest standards for air quality measurements and are therefore the ideal combination of supervisors for our scientific advances. The results of the test series have always been consistent and mutually confirm each other. We renew the tests at regular intervals to prove the effectiveness of newly developed moss modules and test the ideal mosses and their framework conditions.
Very powerful, young mosses
The ILK Dresden tested various pure moss cultures at different stages of maturity. The two species of moss that competed against each other are Hypnum and Brachythecium. Both confirmed the enormous filter effect of earlier tests – but there were only marginal differences between them. The results for the 6-week-old cultures are much more exciting (and pleasant). For the young mosses, the CityTree could demonstrate up to 20 percent stronger fine dust filtration. An integrated second measurement process has confirmed this finding. For us, this means that after just a few weeks, our mosses have already reached a high level of maturity and are ready to start improving the air. In the future, our high-performance mosses will provide fresh, clean air in the middle of the city, inviting passers-by to take a deep breath.
