Extreme heatwaves have become a defining feature of summers worldwide. As global temperatures continue to rise, they are becoming more frequent, intense, and prolonged (Source<\/a><\/strong><\/em>). According to an analysis by the World Weather Attribution, heatwaves are now 30% more likely due to climate change (Source<\/a><\/strong><\/em>). The existing “lack of heat protection” is already costing Germany billions of euros each year, according to Martin Herrmann, Chairman of the German Alliance for Climate Change and Health<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. These challenges necessitate adaptive responses. To address the growing health risks posed by extreme heat, the “Health Minister Conference of the States (GMK)” took a significant step in September 2020, pledging to foster comprehensive heat action plans in municipalities by 2025, as indicated by a source<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. At the national level, collaborative efforts with healthcare stakeholders are underway to develop a heat protection plan (Source<\/a><\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n

While municipalities work on implementing the legal obligation to protect against heat in public spaces, additional difficulties and issues are emerging for businesses: Energy costs for conventional air conditioning and cooling systems are rising, as are the requirements for the working environment. Measures to enhance quality should be taken. These affect both general working conditions (e.g., in manufacturing facilities) and the design of recreational areas (e.g., in cafeteria areas). Such design also poses a challenge for another industry. The real estate sector must ensure that the appropriate compensatory and offset areas, as well as legal regulations, are considered in the design and implementation of projects to ensure the attractiveness of the property for users.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But there’s a ray of hope amid these challenges: Ready-made solutions are at hand. Consider urban greenery, for instance, which has the remarkable capacity to alleviate the consequences of global warming and urbanization, as substantiated by a reliable source<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. The concept of “expanding green infrastructure” and embracing urban green spaces stands out as arguably the most efficient and instinctive approach to curbing urban heat island effects and ensuring the well-being of local residents (Source<\/a><\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>

Social media has recently witnessed a striking comparison between an urban area with abundant greenery and one without, with a focus on temperature measurements (Source: Only the Cook<\/a><\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Naturally, we were compelled to delve into this comparison within the context of our diverse fresh air concepts. The reason being, our innovative approach harnesses the power of integrated specialized mosses<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, coupled with active ventilation, to deliver a substantial temperature reduction, thanks to their impressive evaporation capabilities.<\/p>\n

THE COMPARISON: HOW EFFECTIVE ARE MOSS?<\/h5>\n

We started our experiments and comparisons last summer, utilising a FLIR thermal imaging camera and integrated sensors installed on a CityTree situated in an outdoor setting in Bestensee, Brandenburg. Throughout the scorching summer months, we encountered multiple heatwaves, with temperatures soaring above 40\u00b0C. However, what caught our attention was the refreshing cool breeze consistently emanating from the moss filter.<\/p>\n

Various measurements also confirmed significant temperature differences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

BEGINNING OF MEASUREMENTS IN 2022<\/h5>\n

In the summer of 2022, the actively operated moss biofilter mat had a thermal image temperature of 29\u00b0C, compared to 43.3\u00b0C in the immediate surroundings. The surface temperature of the moss module registered only 15\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

A comparison of the surface temperature of the nearby vegetation with the actively ventilated moss modules also yielded impressive results.<\/p>\n<\/div>

A measurement of 38.1\u00b0C for the vegetation (Thuja occidentalis) was contrasted with a temperature of only 23.8\u00b0C for the active moss mat (Bryophyta). A difference (\u0394T) of 14.3\u00b0C! The results show that the moss surface of the CityTree remains “cool” at 24\u00b0C even with direct sunlight, while other vegetation (in the shade) heated up more.<\/p>\n

Similar results were obtained in the surface temperature comparison for the adjacent shaded glass facade. The temperature here was 42.2\u00b0C, while the active moss mat recorded only 28.5\u00b0C, resulting in a difference (\u0394T) of 13.7\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the CityBreeze<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, Green meets Screen – and based on the integrated actively ventilated moss modules, it is the only DOOH column that cools its surroundings instead of heating them. STRESS TESTS IN EXTREME LOCATIONS – SOUTHERN ITALY<\/h5>\n

As part of a customer project in Southern Europe, we also employed a thermal imaging camera. Since June 2023, one of our CityTrees in Italy<\/a><\/strong><\/em> has been basking in the Mediterranean sun, offering us a fantastic chance to evaluate the effectiveness of the regenerative and intelligent moss filter in this scenic locale.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, the impact of heatwaves and extreme temperatures is widespread, affecting our health, economy, and environment. However, innovative solutions like moss-based cooling systems, which emit 30% less heat at 35.9\u00b0C, offer hope. Extreme Hitzewellen sind mittlerweile ein pr\u00e4gendes Merkmal von Sommern weltweit. Da die globalen Temperaturen stetig steigen, werden sie au\u00dferdem immer h\u00e4ufiger, intensiver und l\u00e4nger anhaltend (<\/span>Quelle<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>). Gem\u00e4\u00df einer Analyse der \u201cWorld Weather Attribution\u201d sind Hitzewellen aufgrund des Klimawandels nun um 30 % wahrscheinlicher (<\/span>Quelle<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>). <\/span>Der existierende \u201eMangel an Hitzeschutz\u201c kostet Deutschland bereits Milliarden Euro pro Jahr, so Martin Herrmann, Vorsitzender von <\/span>Deutsche Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>. <\/span>

Die benannten Entwicklungen erfordern zus\u00e4tzliche Anpassungen und stellen Herausforderungen dar. Um dem \u201cGesundheitsrisiko Hitze\u201d entgegenzuwirken, hat \u201cdie Gesundheitsministerkonferenz der L\u00e4nder (GMK) im September 2020 beschlossen, bis 2025 eine fl\u00e4chendeckende Erstellung von Hitzeaktionspl\u00e4nen in Kommunen voranzutreiben\u201d (<\/span>Quelle<\/a><\/strong><\/em>). National soll ebenfalls zusammen mit \u201cBeteiligten aus dem Gesundheitsbereich, darunter die \u00c4rzteschaft und die Pflege aber auch Krankenkassen, Kommunen und Bundesl\u00e4ndern\u201d ein Hitzeschutzplan erarbeitet werden (<\/span>Quelle<\/a><\/em><\/strong>).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W\u00e4hrend die Kommunen an der Umsetzung der gesetzlichen Verpflichtung zum Schutz vor Hitze in der \u00d6ffentlichkeit arbeiten, kristallisieren sich f\u00fcr Unternehmen weitere Schwierigkeiten und Probleme hinsichtlich dessen heraus: Die Energiekosten f\u00fcr konventionelle Klimaanlagen und K\u00fchlung steigen \u2013 genauso wie auch die Anforderungen an das Arbeitsumfeld. So sollten entsprechende qualit\u00e4tssteigernde Ma\u00dfnahmen unternommen werden. Diese betreffen sowohl allgemeine Arbeitsbedingungen (bspw. in Fertigungshallen) als auch die Gestaltung von Erholungsfl\u00e4chen (bspw. im Kantinen-Bereich). Eine solche Gestaltung erweist sich au\u00dferdem als Herausforderung f\u00fcr eine weitere Branche. Der Real Estate-Sektor muss daf\u00fcr Sorge tragen, dass innerhalb des Entwurfs und der Realisierung von Projekten die entsprechenden Ausgleichs- und Kompensationsfl\u00e4chen sowie gesetzliche Vorschriften ber\u00fccksichtigt werden, um gleichsam die Attraktivit\u00e4t der Immobilie f\u00fcr die Nutzer sicherzustellen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allerdings gibt es auch positive Nachrichten: Um diesen wachsenden Anforderungen gerecht zu werden, existieren bereits L\u00f6sungen. St\u00e4dtisches Gr\u00fcn z.B: ist in der Lage, die Folgen der globalen Erw\u00e4rmung und Urbanisierung abzumildern (<\/span>Quelle<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>). Eine \u201cAusweitung der gr\u00fcnen Infrastruktur\u201c und damit einhergehende st\u00e4dtische Gr\u00fcnfl\u00e4chen sind \u201cvielleicht der effizienteste und intuitivste Weg, um st\u00e4dtische W\u00e4rmeinsel-Effekte zu reduzieren und Komfort f\u00fcr nahegelegene Bewohner zu bieten\u201c (<\/span>Quelle<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Dies wollten wir nat\u00fcrlich auch in Bezug auf unsere verschiedenen Frischluft-Konzepte \u00fcberpr\u00fcfen, denn die <\/span>integrierten spezialisierten Moose<\/span><\/a> k\u00f6nnen in Kombination mit aktiver Ventilation durch ihre hohe Verdunstungsleistung eine sp\u00fcrbare Temperaturreduktion erwirken.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bereits im Sommer vergangenen Jahres starteten wir mit einer <\/span>FLIR-W\u00e4rmebildkamera, einem Infrarot-Thermometer und den integrierten Sensoren im CityTree erste Versuche und Vergleiche an einem CityTree im Outdoor-Bereich (in Bestensee\/ Brandenburg). In den Sommermonaten trafen uns bereits einige Hitzewellen mit Temperaturen \u00fcber 40\u00b0C, doch aus dem Moosfilter str\u00f6mte \u2013 gut wahrnehmbar \u2013 immer eine angenehme k\u00fchle Brise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dies belegten auch diverse Messungen mit enormen Differenzen bez\u00fcglich der Temperaturen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Denn in Italien hei\u00dft es seit Juni 2023 <\/span>\u201cBuon Giorno da Bari!\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/em> f\u00fcr einen unserer CityTrees \u2013 eine willkommene Gelegenheit also, auch hier die Leistungsf\u00e4higkeit des regenerativen und intelligenten Moosfilters zu \u00fcberpr\u00fcfen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Extreme Temperaturen, die Oberfl\u00e4chen auf \u00fcber 50 \u00b0C aufheizen, sind eine Belastung f\u00fcr Menschen, f\u00fcr die Natur und Infrastruktur.
