\u201eExtreme heat, drought, wildfires, and flooding, as experienced in recent years, will worsen in Europe even under optimistic global warming scenarios and affect living conditions throughout the continent\u201c<\/a>, stated the European Environment Agency<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/em> (EEA).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Europe is “the fastest warming continent in the world” <\/a>and climate risks are threatening “its energy and food security, ecosystems, infrastructure, water resources, financial stability, and people\u2019s health”<\/a> in Europe, according to the first ever European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA)<\/em><\/a><\/strong> published yesterday.
\nOf particular concern: Many “of these risks<\/a>” have “already reached critical levels and could become catastrophic without urgent and decisive action<\/a>“.<\/div>\n

\u201eOur new analysis shows that Europe faces urgent climate risks that are growing faster than our societal preparedness. To ensure the resilience of our societies, European and national policymakers must act now to reduce climate risks both by rapid emission cuts and by strong adaptation policies and actions\u201c<\/a>, said Leena Yl\u00e4-Mononen, EEA Executive Director.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

WWF Germany (WWF Deutschland<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a>) also emphasizes: “Europe is warming faster than any other continent and is most affected by the climate crisis. […] The report warns: European climate protection measures and adaptation strategies are insufficient.”<\/a>
\n“Hundreds of thousands of people could die from heatwaves. Economic losses from coastal floods alone could exceed 1 trillion euros per year”<\/a>, according to the analysis.
\nAs reported by WWF Germany<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a>, “hotspots of vulnerable regions […] according to the report, include Southern Europe, which will be particularly affected by wildfires, heatwaves, and water scarcity. However, lower-lying coastal regions including many densely populated cities are vulnerable to floods and erosion.”<\/a><\/div>\n
