A recent study conducted by the University of Vienna and ETH Lausanne has revealed that fine dust pollution in climbing and bouldering gyms has reached \u201cconcerning levels\u201d<\/a>. A report by the Technical University of Darmstadt<\/a> confirms that these levels \u201care comparable to those found in industrial workplaces exposed to high levels of dust\u201d<\/a>. This pollution is primarily caused by the abrasion of climbing shoe soles and can be up to a thousand times higher than on heavily trafficked highways<\/a>, even “surpassing the fine dust levels faced by road workers in overcrowded Chinese cities”<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The current findings are not entirely surprising: They \u201care based on fine dust measurements from 2008, which already documented high pollution levels in climbing halls\u201d<\/a>. At the time, measurements from \u201cseveral halls across Germany showed values exceeding the fine dust limits for outdoor air\u201d<\/a>, which have now been reaffirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Causes and Health Impacts<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The fine dust in climbing gyms results from the abrasion of rubber soles on climbing shoes and the use of magnesium powder. The soles are made “from the same material as car tires, packed with additives that are potentially harmful to health\u201d<\/a>. Magnesium carbonate, used to prevent sweaty hands and improve grip, is also problematic as \u201cthe fine white powder generates fine dust particles\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Exercising or engaging in physical activity in environments with high air pollution, such as elevated fine dust levels, can \u201cdo more harm than good\u201d<\/a> and negatively affect the cardiovascular system<\/a>. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause long-term health damage, as they can \u201center the bloodstream through the alveoli and reach other organs. In the heart and blood vessels, they cause chronic inflammation, which can lead to arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. The smallest fine dust particles can even cross the blood-brain barrier and trigger inflammation in the brain\u201d<\/a>, according to the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (Deutsches Zentrum f\u00fcr Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung e. V.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>, DZHK). Infants and children, being particularly vulnerable, should not spend extended periods in climbing hallls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Analyses show that improving air quality can significantly enhance athletic performance, which is particularly beneficial for professional athletes. Philipp Fl\u00f6\u00dfel, a sports scientist at TU Dresden<\/a>, emphasizes: \u201cGood air quality is crucial for athletes’ performance. Studies show that clean air can greatly improve recovery and performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>
