Frequent and intense heatwaves, combined with rising pollutant concentrations, are expected to lead to a significant decline in quality of life, according to computer simulations. \u201cThe number of deaths from air pollution could quintuple, while temperature-related fatalities might increase sevenfold.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

However, the EEA analysis also highlights a \u201ctrend towards improved long-term health outcomes regarding air pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3)\u201d<\/a>, according to Der Spiegel<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jean Sciare, climate researcher and co-author of the study, emphasized: \u201cThe study\u2019s findings highlight the importance of acting now to prevent future loss of life\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The EEA also stresses in its report on the health and environmental impacts of air pollution that fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ground-level ozone (O3) pose significant health risks. These pollutants are responsible for millions of premature deaths worldwide, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. \u201cIn European cities, too many people are exposed to poor air quality, leading to illnesses and premature deaths”, noted EEA Executive Director Leena Yl\u00e4-Mononen<\/a>.<\/p>\n
