United for the Future of Water and Resilient Sponge Cities<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div>

Water is our most precious resource<\/a> \u2013 and it stands at the heart of urban transformation. At the 3rd cross-state Water Congress Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony<\/em><\/strong><\/a> on May 12 and 13, 2025, around 250 experts from politics, business, and science discussed innovative solutions for a secure, sustainable, and resilient water supply. Green City Solutions participated with CEO Peter S\u00e4nger as a driving force for bio-digital innovations and the sponge city concept<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Challenges: Climate Change, Structural Transformation, Water Scarcity<\/h5>\n

The pressure to act is high: climate change, population growth, and the structural transformation resulting from the coal phase-out are intensifying conflicts over water use<\/a>. The next ten years will be crucial for developing\u00a0<\/a>viable strategies for water supply<\/a> in Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony. As the Berlin Association of Merchants and Industrialists<\/strong> (Verein Berliner Kaufleute und Industrieller, VBKI<\/em><\/strong><\/a>) summarizes: \u201cWater is becoming a scarce resource. Climate change and structural transformation are intensifying usage conflicts \u2013 prioritization and viable strategies are urgently needed.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cBerlin and Brandenburg are among the driest regions in Germany. How can we ensure water supply in our region?\u201d asked rbb24<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. The Water Congress provided an ideal platform to work together on solutions for a resilient, sustainable, and livable city of the future.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Sponge City: Moss as Green Sponges for the City of Tomorrow<\/strong><\/h5>\n

A central topic of the congress was the sponge city principle<\/em><\/strong><\/a> \u2013 a future model for sustainable urban development and climate adaptation. Sponge city means:\u00a0\u201cRainwater should not simply flow into waterways via the sewage system, but should be collected and stored for use where it is needed.\u201d<\/a> As a spokesperson for the Association of Municipal\u00a0Enterprises (Verbands Kommunaler Unternehmen, VKU)<\/strong> told rbb<\/a><\/em><\/strong>: \u201cStored rainwater can be used for irrigation, saving valuable drinking water.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Green City Solutions presented bio-digital innovations such as WallBreeze, CityTree, and CityBreeze<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which harness the natural abilities of mosses as \u201cgreen sponges”<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. These store and evaporate water<\/strong>, purify the air<\/strong>\u00a0and sustainably improve the urban climate<\/strong>. In this way, these natural filters make an active contribution to climate adaptation<\/strong>, enhancing urban quality of life<\/strong>\u00a0and protecting valuable resources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Our CEO Peter S\u00e4nger spoke in his presentation at the Water Congress 2025 about the most important resource \u2013 besides air \u2013 and how the sponge city concept can be put into practice<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Collaboration and Innovation: Solutions for the \u201cWater Future of Our Regions\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n

The Water Congress impressively demonstrated the importance of cross-state cooperation and innovative approaches. \u201c\u2018We must learn to think and act together,\u2019 said VBKI Managing Director Ute Weiland as she opened the discussion.\u201d <\/a>Effective collaboration can quickly deliver impactful solutions. \u201cWater policy can only be successful if it is considered across departments and state borders.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

IHK Berlin emphasized:\u00a0\u201cThe positive aspect: the commitment to finding solutions across borders is greater than ever\u201d<\/a> \u2013 in other words: water is on everyone\u2019s lips<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ramona Giese, Senior Consultant at Drees & Sommer, wrote in her LinkedIn summary \u201cAbsorb it and store it\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/a>:\u00a0\u201cThere are many levers, but also already proven approaches such as rainwater storage, evaporation through greening, and green retention roofs that are putting us on the right track.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>

Excursions, Exchange and Innovative Pitches<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCoordination instead of competition was one of the most important topics of the day.\u201d<\/a> The program included excursions to sponge city\u00a0projects with the Berlin Rainwater Agency, a networking evening on the Spree, and four pitches from innovative companies<\/a> such as Green City Solutions, LuxChemtech and KWB Energiesysteme.<\/p>\n

For example, Stephan Gruhlke<\/em><\/strong>, mayoral candidate of Eichwalde, was inspired after Peter S\u00e4nger\u2019s presentation:<\/p>\n

\u201cI took away inspiring ideas on natural air purification. A visit to the manufacturer is already scheduled.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

This visit has since taken place, as he was \u201ccurious about innovative ideas\u201d<\/a><\/em> and was \u201cinformed on site by the experts about a great concept.<\/em>\u201d<\/a> His conclusion: \u201cHere, solutions are being developed that use highly sophisticated moss mat technology for natural air purification in both indoor and outdoor areas.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

But it didn\u2019t stop at theory:\u00a0\u201cThe municipality of Sch\u00f6nefeld and the city of Wildau have already been convinced by this concept. I was able to see the products in practical use. Depending on the model, the modules provide the same performance as 20 to almost 80 free-standing trees in nature. These can also be combined with displays for advertising or information.\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Regional, Connected, and Future-Oriented: The Sponge City as a Key to Resilient Cities<\/strong><\/h5>\n

\u201cIn Germany, the first drought reports of the season are already accumulating. The perfect timing”<\/a> for the Water Congress 2025<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The event made it clear: the sponge city is a key to climate-resilient, livable, and sustainable cities of the future. Moss-based innovations such as WallBreeze, CityTree, and CityBreeze make an active contribution to climate adaptation, air purification, and resource protection.<\/p>\n
