Why Cities Need to Go Green Now \u2013 and How Innovative, Nature-Based Solutions Can Help<\/p><\/h3><\/div>
The \u201csummer of the century\u201d is looming in 2025<\/a>: Heat is no longer a marginal issue, but the greatest climate-related health risk in Germany<\/strong><\/a>. Today, June 4th, is the nationwide Heat Action Day<\/strong><\/em><\/a> \u2013 an occasion to highlight the dangers of heatwaves, the importance of heat protection, and the role of urban greenery and innovative solutions.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s action day is themed \u201cHeat Protection for All\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The goal is to raise awareness of the health risks posed by heat and to focus on concrete protective measures. Heat \u201ccan be dangerous for everyone, and the risk will continue to increase in the coming years\u201d<\/a> \u2013 but especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants and children, pregnant women<\/strong>, the sick, or the homeless are most at risk.<\/p>\n<\/div> Photo: Heat Action Day<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div> Last year, the German Environmental Aid<\/strong> (Deutsche Umwelthilfe, DUH<\/strong><\/em><\/a>) announced: \u201cMany German cities failed the first heat check.<\/a>\u201d Cities are undoubtedly the living spaces of the future. However, urban areas heat up particularly strongly due to dense construction, sealed surfaces, and a lack of greenery. Globally, 80% of cities are facing extreme climate-related events.<\/p>\n Extreme heatwaves have become a defining feature of summers worldwide. As global temperatures continue to rise, these events are becoming more frequent, intense, and prolonged<\/a>. According to an analysis by World Weather Attribution<\/strong><\/em>, heatwaves are now 30% more likely due to climate change<\/a>. The existing \u201clack of heat protection\u201d is already costing Germany billions of euros annually, says Martin Herrmann, Chair of the German Alliance on Climate Change and Health<\/strong> (Deutsche Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit<\/em><\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n The so-called urban heat island effect<\/strong> <\/a>means that city centers are often several degrees warmer than surrounding areas. This creates hotspots that pose significant health risks to the population \u2013 especially for older people, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.<\/p>\n<\/div> The Consequences Are Dramatic:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201eDue to climate change, the problem of excess mortality in summer will become even more severe in the future,\u201d UBA President Messner is quoted as saying.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div> Photos: Moritz Ludke via Unsplash & Federal Environment Agency<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div> Heat Action Day is initiated by the German Medical Association and the German Alliance on Climate Change and Health (Deutschen Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit e.V., KLUG) and is supported by a broad alliance of healthcare, social organizations, municipalities, and other stakeholders.<\/a> The initiators are calling for binding heat protection plans, more public drinking water stations, cool retreats and better public education.<\/strong> It is particularly emphasized that heat protection is a societal responsibility and must not be limited to the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n Responses are happening, but often too slowly. The Federal Ministry of Health has presented new and expanded heat protection plans that call for binding nationwide measures<\/strong><\/a>. Cities like Jena<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (\u201cthe warmest city in Thuringia\u201d<\/a>) and Dortmund<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are already implementing dynamic action plans, ranging from drinking water fountains to cool retreats<\/a> and awareness campaigns. The Berliner Senate<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is planning a heat action plan<\/a>. The German Environmental Aid (DUH)<\/strong> is calling for a master plan<\/strong> for heat protection in all cities.<\/a><\/p>\n But how can cities truly become cooler in a sustainable and efficient way?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div> Source: City of Dortmund \u201cCool Places Map\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div> \u201e\u201cHealth-related heat protection must be integrated into all infrastructure, construction, and urban development measures. Climate protection as the most important health project of our time must be given top priority\u201d, says Dr. Martin Herrmann<\/strong>, Chair of KLUG e.V.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Green infrastructure is a key to reducing heat in cities. Parks, trees, green facades and green roofs<\/strong><\/em><\/a> lower ambient temperatures, improve air quality, and promote health. Urban greenery, for example, can mitigate the effects of global warming and urbanization<\/a>. An \u201cexpansion of green infrastructure\u201d<\/a> and the resulting urban green spaces are \u201cperhaps the most efficient and intuitive way to reduce urban heat island effects and provide comfort for nearby residents”.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div> The World Economic Forum has pointed out that \u201cnature is the most resource-efficient solution for creating resilient, vibrant, and future-proof cities\u201d<\/a>. But that\u2019s not all: As early as 2021, a \u201cgroundbreaking study\u201d<\/a> by the International Institute for Sustainable Development<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>(IISD<\/em><\/strong><\/a>) found that \u201cusing nature in infrastructure projects could save$248 billion per year\u201d<\/a>!<\/p>\n Barbara Metz<\/strong>, Federal Managing Director of the German Environmental Aid (Bundesgesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrerin der Deutsche Umwelthilfe<\/strong><\/a><\/em>), also emphasizes the need for \u201cmandatory shares of green and blue infrastructure that must be firmly anchored in urban planning. Particularly vulnerable groups such as residents in care facilities, schoolchildren, and children in daycare centers need targeted protection from heat\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n What do nature-based solutions look like?<\/strong> It\u2019s not about a single measure, but many different ones.<\/p>\n<\/div> Photos: GCS<\/p>\n<\/div> Mosses are true climate protectors. They bind fine dust, cool through evaporation, and improve air quality. Green City Solutions leverages these properties in innovative moss filters, which can be specifically deployed at urban heat hotspots. These filters lower ambient temperatures, filter pollutants, and create noticeably better comfort \u2013 even in highly stressed locations.<\/p>\n<\/div> Since summer 2022, we have been conducting initial tests and comparisons<\/em><\/strong><\/a> using a FLIR thermal imaging camera, an infrared thermometer, and the integrated sensors in the CityTree, both outdoors in Bestensee (Brandenburg) and in the Italian city of Bari<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. During the summer months, we already experienced several heatwaves with temperatures above 40\u00b0C, but the moss filter always emitted a pleasantly cool breeze \u2013 clearly noticeable. This creates green oases in the heart of the city, improving not only the climate but also people\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n<\/div> The research is clear, the solutions are available \u2013 now cities must act. Urban greening, innovative moss filters, and targeted heat protection measures are the key to livable, healthy cities of the future.
