The <\/strong>\u201eserious health impacts of poor air quality\u201c<\/strong><\/a><\/p><\/h3><\/div>

\u201eEurope is hunting a killer called particulate matter\u201c<\/a>, was the headline in German weekly DER SPIEGEL<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>at the end of November. The trigger \u201enew data from the European Environment Agency<\/strong> (EEA)\u201c<\/a>, that, as as Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH)<\/strong><\/em><\/a> points out, once again demonstrate \u201ethe serious health impacts of poor air quality in Germany\u201c<\/a> and across Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Air pollution is deadly \u2013 why Europe\u2019s progress is still not enough<\/strong><\/h5>\n

With its latest analysis, \u201eHarm to human health from air pollution in Europe: burden of disease status, 2025\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0EEA <\/em><\/strong><\/a>once again delivers clear evidence: despite significant progress, 95% of urban residents in Europe are still exposed to air pollution levels above WHO recommendations.<\/strong><\/a> Fine particulate matter (PM\u2082.\u2085), nitrogen dioxide (NO\u2082) and ground-level ozone (O\u2083) drive cardiovascular disease, strokes, diabetes, asthma and lung cancer \u2013 and lead to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths.<\/p>\n

For Germany<\/strong>, Deutsche Umwelthilfe<\/em><\/strong><\/a> has analysed the EEA data:
\nIn 2023 alone, according to DUH, 57,564 deaths were attributable to particulate matter, 23,013 to nitrogen dioxide and 22,114 to ozone<\/strong> <\/a>. At the same time, SPIEGEL<\/em> <\/strong> <\/a> reports a decline in the overall number of victims \u2013 a success of stricter limit values and air quality measures<\/a>. However, the scale remains dramatic: Air pollution continues to be one of the major health risks of our time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

The EEA clearly shows how closely air quality and disease burden<\/strong> are linked: Particularly affected are ischaemic heart disease, strokes, COPD, diabetes and, increasingly, dementia.<\/a><\/p>\n

If WHO guideline values for air pollutants had been met in 2023, the EU could have avoided 182,000 deaths from fine particulate matter (PM\u2082.\u2085), 63,000 from ground-level ozone (O\u2083) and 34,000 from nitrogen dioxide (NO\u2082).<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>

Nature-based solutions for urban spaces<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Many of these health burdens arise exactly where people live their everyday lives: where they live, work, shop and wait \u2013 on streets, squares, at public transport stops and in dense urban districts.<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of these alarming figures, Deutsche Umwelthilfe is calling on the German Federal Government to introduce, for the first time, a legally binding limit value for ozone and to fully implement the new EU air quality limit values for particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide by 2028, rather than only from 2030 onwards.<\/a><\/p>\n

Avoiding emissions remains the most important lever \u2013 without a transformation in transport and energy and strict exhaust standards, there will be no healthy air. At the same time, practical experience in many cities shows that even ambitious policies will not prevent exceedances of limit and guideline values at urban hotspots for years to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>
