A celebratory Awards Ceremony in Berlin
Climate change becomes tangible when urban heat islands affect everyday life or extreme weather events pose immediate challenges for cities. The 2026 Federal “Blauer Kompass” Award, marking its tenth anniversary, demonstrated impressively that effective prevention and climate adaptation can be achieved locally.
The best projects for climate preparedness and adaptation – 10 years of the “Blauer Kompass” Award: The celebratory awards ceremony has now taken place in Berlin. Our co-founder and Managing Director, Peter Sänger, attended the event and personally accepted Green City Solutions’ nomination certificate.

A strong signal for nature-based Climate Adaptation
The Federal “Blauer Kompass” Award is regarded as “Germany’s highest state award for exemplary climate adaptation” and is jointly presented by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) and the German Environment Agency (UBA).
In its anniversary year, the competition received a record 488 entries. Green City Solutions’ inclusion among the 25 nominated projects in the “Private and Municipal Enterprises” category, with our project“Moss-based climate resilience: bio-digital solutions for heat and pollutant reduction”, affirms our approach: nature-based climate adaptation and measurable climate resilience are integral to modern urban development. At the heart of our work is our holistic fresh-air concept, which provides targeted relief in places where people are particularly affected by summer heat and fine-particle pollution.

Six outstanding projects recognised
Alongside the recognition of all 25 nominees, six winning projects were announced at the event. Each will receive prize money of €25,000, as well as national media support.
Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider said: “This summer’s heat has shown us how important it is to take a forward-looking approach to climate change. Fortunately, we are not starting from scratch; we can learn from successful projects across the country. The many strong applications for the ‘Blauer Kompass’ Award demonstrate this. It is encouraging to see the level of commitment in so many parts of the country to ensuring that our home remains a good place to live, even as the climate changes. With the ‘Blauer Kompass’, we recognise the best ideas and show what is possible—inspiring even more people to follow their example.”
