Sharing Moss Expertise and Creating Synergies

Recently, we had the pleasure of presenting two of our carefully cultivated moss mats – grown over several years on our moss farm – to the Botanical Garden in Berlin-Dahlem. These moss mats will now become part of the garden’s dedicated moss section, where they will not only introduce visitors to the diversity of moss species and cultivation techniques but also allow for the observation of their natural development in a new environment.

“At Green City Solutions, we are thrilled to have found a partner in the team at the Dahlem Moss Garden who shares our passion for moss”, said our CEO, Peter Sänger.

Collaborating in Moss Research: Sharing Knowledge, Creating Synergies

We greatly appreciate the insightful and inspiring exchange on moss cultivation, species selection, and best practices for establishing and maintaining moss ecosystems. This collaboration aims to raise awareness of the crucial role mosses play in urban environments and to explore innovative solutions for sustainable city development.

Our moss mats were officially handed over to Irmgard Henneken, a staff member at the Botanical Garden, and Cora Schaumann, donator of the Moss Garden. Together, they placed the mats in their new setting. Additionally, Jürgen Klawitter, an experienced expert in moss identification and classification, enriched the exchange with his specialized knowledge.

Moss Farm & Moss Garden

This initiative follows an earlier visit by the Moss Garden team to our moss farm and company headquarters in Bestensee, Brandenburg. There, they gained insights into our innovative moss cultivation methods, which enable moss to grow up to 16 times faster under controlled conditions than in nature. This exchange of knowledge marks the foundation of this initiative and lays the groundwork for future collaboration and a shared commitment to enhancing urban biodiversity.

“The World in a Garden”

… this was the vision of Director Adolf Engler when he designed the Botanical Garden in Dahlem at the turn of the 20th century.

What could be a more fitting addition than a Moss Garden? Mosses are true survivalists, thriving on every continent – from the humid rainforests of the tropics to the icy expanses of the Arctic, from high mountain ranges to deep caves, and even in deserts. “Mosses are among the oldest living land plants, having grown on Earth for over 300 million years. Some descendants of these ancient species have survived to this day.”

Their remarkable adaptability makes them a fascinating part of the global plant kingdom, and their place in the Botanical Garden reflects nature’s incredible diversity.

By integrating our moss mats into the Moss Garden, we are not only contributing to its visual appeal but also showcasing a living example of effective moss cultivation. Visitors to the Botanical Garden now have the opportunity to experience the impressive capabilities of moss firsthand and learn about its role in improving air quality and promoting biodiversity.

We look forward to continued collaboration with the Moss Garden team and are excited about the insights and discoveries this partnership will bring.
