The NordseePassage Wilhelmshaven Installs a CityBreeze
With the installation of a CityBreeze in early December, the NordseePassage Wilhelmshaven – together with Green City Solutions – is setting a visible marker for improved air quality, enhanced visitor comfort, innovative communication, and sustainable development: living moss right in the vibrant heart of the city.
Cutting-Edge Moss Technology Meets Maritime Flair
While the North Sea breeze and salty air shape the atmosphere outside, the CityBreeze brings a touch of green, climate‑effective nature directly under the glass roof of the NordseePassage through its living moss system.
A biotech filter with an integrated bench, a large-format screen, and dark-blue LED lighting has been installed directly in the high-traffic children’s area opposite C&A. Families in particular benefit from this.
“With the CityBreeze, we are creating a small oasis right in the children’s area – a place where parents can relax, enjoy fresh air, and still keep an eye on the lively center activity. This noticeably enhances the overall visitor experience – and that is exactly what matters to us as a shopping and leisure destination”, explains Center Managerin, Rita Phieler.

Green Innovation Under Glass: A Cool Climate on the Coast
As the glass-covered, light-filled centerpiece of downtown Wilhelmshaven, the NordseePassage is a central meeting point. In this context, sustainable infrastructure is becoming increasingly important – for visitors as well as for owners and operators, ensuring that this popular visitor hotspot does not become a heat hotspot. Where many people come together and a unique glass roof allows for ample daylight, specific challenges arise: increased temperatures and reduced air circulation. Innovative solutions are needed that not only improve the visitor experience but also actively enhance air quality and cooling. This is exactly where the CityBreeze from Green City Solutions comes into play.
“As Center Manager of the NordseePassage, it was important to me that we combine our high level of service and comfort with a clear contribution to sustainability. The CityBreeze aligns perfectly with our ESG objectives: It improves air quality on-site, integrates visually into our center design, and offers us a modern digital communication platform. This makes sustainability truly visible in the NordseePassage – for our tenants, our guests, and the entire region”, adds Rita Phieler.

With its combination of air filtration and cooling, greenery, seating, and digital screen, the versatile CityBreeze blends seamlessly into the existing service landscape of the NordseePassage, which already promises guests a “comfortable and relaxed shopping experience”.
How the CityBreeze Refreshes the NordseePassage?
Moss as a Mini-Ecosystem Inside the Shopping Center
The revitalizing moss in the CityBreeze removes up to 82% of fine dust from the surrounding air, humidifies it, and cools it by up to -4°C (K). This creates a pleasant, refreshing breeze exactly where one wouldn’t expect it.
On the opposite side, a 75-inch LCD screen provides space for digital communication. In addition to improving the microclimate, the NordseePassage uses the CityBreeze as part of the green DOOH advertising network climAD. Center and tenant promotions, events, and services can be displayed in real time – right where the target groups are.
“Our tenants benefit from attractive conditions, and we as a center gain an additional platform to promote activities, events, and services in real time. Especially in such a highly frequented location like the children’s area, this is a real lever for steering visitor flow, increasing dwell time, and making offers visible exactly where people spend their time”, emphasizes Rita Phieler.
The CityBreeze thus becomes a long-term, strategic component of the NordseePassage’s marketing and location development approach:
“For us in center management, it is a valuable marketing tool: We make our services, events, and offers immediately tangible – and with a clearly sustainable added value.”

Long-Term Partnership and Full Service
Together with property manager GRR GARBE Retail Real Estate GmbH and the responsible local partners, the CityBreeze was installed in December. Green City Solutions will take over all upcoming maintenance tasks and technical service.
“We particularly appreciate that all maintenance and service come from a single source. This allows us to fully focus on our core mission: continuing to develop the NordseePassage as a friendly, modern, and sustainable shopping and recreational destination – while the CityBreeze quietly ensures good air and strong visibility in the background”, summarizes Rita Phieler.
With CityBreeze and climAD, the NordseePassage Wilhelmshaven strengthens its position as an urban meeting point and high-traffic shopping destination – while showcasing how ESG-driven, climate-effective urban furniture and digital marketing can go hand in hand in an established shopping center.
