Green City Solutions at the BETTER FUTURE CONFERENCE 2025
On April 29, 2025, our CEO and Co-Founder Peter Sänger was a panelist at the renowned BETTER FUTURE CONFERENCE hosted by WELT. Under the motto “Out of the Box: Innovative Ideas for Greater Sustainability“, he discussed the future of sustainable innovations with Matthias Engel (Vireo Ventures) and Julia Katrin Rohde (agriBIOME) at the Journalistenclub in the Axel Springer building in Berlin. The panel was moderated by Moritz Seyffarth, Editor-in-Chief of Business Insider Germany.

Sustainability as an Economic Factor – and a Societal Responsibility
Sustainability as an Economic Factor – and a Societal Responsibility
The WELT AM SONNTAG conference series regularly focuses on ideas and opportunities for a better future. The anniversary edition of the BETTER FUTURE CONFERENCE was dedicated to Sustainability. Leading figures from politics, business, and the sustainability sector came together in its tenth year to discuss how sustainable innovations can be advanced in Germany. Because “[a]way from ideology and taboos”, it was about “[m]ore sense of reality […] [and] about filling the concept of sustainability with new life. Also to protect our democracy”.
Two years ago, Green City Solutions received the „FUTURE PIONEERS AWARD“ from WELT and Business Insider. Now, Peter Sänger emphasized at the Out-of-the-Box panel that it is necessary to “bring people along” when it comes to sustainability:
“You also have to talk about successes, […] to reach society.” However, as WELT describes in “Courage to Honesty”, this does not always succeed “away from the ‘Berlin bubble'”.
Therefore, Peter Sänger emphasized afterwards on LinkedIn that sustainability should not be understood as an obstacle and brake, but as an opportunity for innovation and competitiveness. Rather, we all want a “BETTER FUTURE“, but the expectations are “high, the challenges even greater”, and therefore “a lot has to happen and above all quickly. And the topic of sustainability, socially, economically and ecologically, must not be forgotten.”
Especially in times of great challenges – from the energy transition to the transformation of industry – Sänger believes that it takes the courage to break new ground and understand sustainability as an opportunity for economic resilience and future viability.

Honest Debates and Innovative Solutions
The conference made it clear how different the understanding of sustainability is in politics, business, and society. The discussions ranged from the current situation of the chemical industry in Saxony-Anhalt, to the energy future and electricity prices, to new narratives for a sustainable transformation. Particularly impressive were the words of Dr. Reiner Haseloff on the situation of the industry and the impulses of Maja Göpel for a new narrative of departure.
