HEALTHY AIR FOR EVERYONE
WE BRING NATURE BACK TO THE CITY
Air pollution and rising temperatures are among the major environmental problems in cities and have a serious impact on human health. Polluted air and, above all, the fine dust it contains attacks all human organs and leads to everything from heart and lung problems to dementia, cancer and skin diseases. In addition, the temperatures in our cities are rising due to climate change and a lack of greenery. Urban heat islands arise – another danger for people and nature. At Green City Solutions, we want to take targeted action against these environmental problems and make a positive contribution to sustainable, healthy urban development. With this goal in mind, we have developed the world’s first BioTech filter for demonstrably improving air quality.
Superhero Moss

Mosses have a huge surface, comparable to the human lung. On this surface, fine dust particles from the air are electrostatically attracted and stick to it, similar to a microfiber cloth. The difference to the microfiber cloth, however, is that the moss metabolizes the fine dust particles, i.e. “eats” the fine dust. This extraordinary ability makes mosses true superheroes in the fight against air pollution!

THE PROBLEM
Local air quality & our health
The lack of fresh cool air in the city is felt most strongly on hot afternoons. The high levels of particulate matter from rush hour traffic and the heat islands that occur due to the combination of lack of shade and strong sunlight have serious health effects. These environmental influences hit children, the elderly and those with previous illnesses the hardest, because they are particularly prone to lung diseases and overheating.

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?
Try it yourself

Air pollution can be caused by solid particles such as soot or gases like nitrogen dioxide. In the city, particulate matter makes up a large part of air pollution. It consists of a complex mixture of tiny particles. The nasty thing about it is that you can usually neither see nor smell it.
THE SOLUTION
Our solution comes from nature
Moss has the natural ability to bind fine dust and metabolize it. In addition, mosses cool the surrounding air by evaporating water on their enormous leaf surface. These capabilities can be optimally used to improve local air quality and make Moss a sustainable, regenerative fine dust filter with a cooling effect.
Biology + Technology

Air-purifying moss

Sensor technology and supply
We combine the natural abilities of moss with the latest Internet of Things sensors and active ventilation and irrigation technology. The combination of these technologies not only ensures the survival of the mosses outside of their natural habitat, but also optimizes their cooling and filtering effect on the environment. The built-in IoT sensors generate enormous amounts of data in real time, which are made visible by a specially developed online dashboard. The data provide extensive information about the environmental performance and the condition of the bio-filters. In addition, information about the surrounding situation and air quality is available. Thus it is possible at any time to quantitatively prove the environmental performance of a single – or several – bio-filters.

How does moss filter fine dust from the air?

The cooling effect
Mosses can store up to 20 times their own weight in water and evaporate. In combination with our active ventilation, the ambient temperature can be reduced by up to 4 degrees, which corresponds to a cooling capacity of up to 6,500 watts. This ability is ideal for combating urban heat islands, which are becoming an ever greater danger for people and nature due to the advancing climate change.
The noticeably fresher air and the pleasant smell of the forest not only have a positive effect on the urban climate, but people’s mental health also benefits from urban greening.

OUR MOSS FARM
Cultivation of our sustainable resource
Through many years of research and development, we have been able to identify the most suitable moss species out of 16,000 and now grow them in our own moss farm. Our vertical cultivation method allows us to save an enormous amount of space: our moss farm has a footprint of 300m² and space for over 1200m² of vertical cultivation.

Cooling effect: Real-World Tests
In scientifically validated measurements with the ILK Dresden (Institute for Air and Refrigeration Technology), a cooling effect of the ambient temperature of up to 2.5 °C could be measured at a distance of one meter.

Filter effect: Real-World Tests
Independent field studies by the TROPOS Institute have shown that a filter effect of 53% is detectable at a distance of 1 meter. In addition, the ILK Dresden has demonstrated a filter effect of up to 82% directly at the moss.
Progress through data analysis
Each project is accompanied by our specialists in data analysis and sensor technology. Our customers regularly receive comprehensive reports on the achieved improvement of air quality and other factors of the site analysis. Each implemented project thus provides us with new insights, such as the influence of wind direction and strength on the filter effect or the temporal fluctuations in local air quality.
